Client: Sonterra Partners

Throughout King Ranch’s 2,000 acres, McGough Group has created an extensive system of parks, trails and open spaces has been designed to provide residents with a myriad of recreational and social opportunities. The community parks and trails are proposed in very visible locations to add open space views and appropriate locations for accessibility. The open space vistas will add to the aesthetic appeal of the individual neighborhoods as well as the community as a whole.

One of the unique features is the nearly 4 miles of frontage along the Gila River. The property borders a segment of the river, which has been designated as part of a regional study area known as The El Rio Vision. This regional effort is designed to provide for the safe conveyance of floodwaters and to provide the residents of Goodyear a multitude of recreational and educational opportunities.

The two principal elements McGough Group are involved in within the King Ranch site are the El Rio Linear Park and the King Ranch Habitat Restoration Park. These elements help create diverse native vegetation and flood control, trail connections to the Estrella Mountains and a continuous hike and bike trail on the south side of the Gila River.

The proposed King Ranch Habitat Restoration Park site is a groundbreaking initiative that proposes to be an outdoor laboratory and classroom for scientists and environmentalists. The vision for the restoration park is to allow for wetland studies, native vegetation restoration areas and water quality enhancement experiments. The park is intended to serve as a model for environmental restoration and education.
